korean level 1, lesson 5-10

1) 이에요 / 예요 [i-e-yo / ye-yo]

Final consonant + 이에요 [i-e-yo]
No final consonant (Only vowel) + 예요 [ye-yo]

2) Sentence Structure

English sentence structure:
ABC + [be] + DEF.
** DEF is a noun here.
Ex)
ABC is DEF.
I am ABC.
You are XYZ.
Korean sentence structure:
ABC + DEF + [be]
** DEF is a noun here.
Ex)
이거 ABC예요. [i-geo ABC-ye-yo] = This is ABC

3) Sample Sentences

물이에요. = 물 + 이에요 [mul + i-e-yo]
(It’s) water.

가방이에요. = 가방 + 이에요 [ga-bang + i-e-yo]
(It’s) a bag.

사무실이에요. = 사무실 + 이에요 [sa-mu-sil + i-e-yo]
(It’s) an office.

학교예요. = 학교 + 예요 [hak-gyo + ye-yo]
(It’s) a school.

저예요. = 저 + 예요 [ jeo + ye-yo]
(It’s) me.

4) Asking questions

You can also make this a question simply by raising the tone at the end of the sentence

물이에요. [mul-i-e-yo] = It’s water.
물이에요? [mul-i-e-yo?] = Is that water? Is this water?

학교예요. [hak-gyo-ye-yo] = It’s a school.
학교예요? [hak-yo-ye-yo] = Is it a school? Are you at school now?

뭐 [mwo] = what
뭐예요? [mwo-ye-yo?] = What is it? What’s that?

5) 이거 [i-geo] = this, this one
이 [i] (“this”) + 것 [geot] (“thing”) = 이것 [i-geot] --> 이거 [i-geo]
이거 [i-geo] is originally 이것 [i-geot] and it is a combination of 이 [i] (“this”) and 것 [geot]
(“thing”) but it is often used as just 이거 [i-geo] for the ease of pronunciation

6) Sample Sentences 2 (for vocab)

이거 책이에요. [i-geo chaek-i-e-yo] = This is a book.

이거 카메라예요. [i-geo ka-me-ra-ye-yo] = This is a camera.

이거 커피예요. [i-geo keo-pi-ye-yo] = This is coffee.

이거 사전이에요. [i-geo sa-jeon-i-e-yo] = This is a dictionary.

7) 이거 뭐예요? [i-geo mwo-ye-yo?] = What is this?

이거 뭐예요? [i-geo mwo-ye-yo?] = What is this?
이거 핸드폰이에요. [i-geo haen-deu-pon-i-e-yo] = This is a cellphone.

이거 뭐예요? [i-geo mwo-ye-yo?] = What is this?
이거 물이에요. [i-geo mul-i-e-yo] = This is water.

이거 뭐예요? [i-geo mwo-ye-yo?] = What is this?
이거 커피예요. [i-geo keo-pi-ye-yo] = This is coffee.

8) Modifiers
이 [i] = this (near you)
그 [geu] = the / that (near the other person)
저 [ jeo] = that (over there)

9) Usage: like chinese zhe ge and na ge

이 [i] = this
이 + 것 = 이것 [i-geot] or 이거 [i-geo] = this thing, this item, this one

그 [geu] = the, that
그 + 것 = 그것 [geu-geot] or 그거 [geu-geo] = the thing, the item, that one, it

저 [ jeo] = the, that, that ... over there
저 + 것 = 저것 [geu-geot] or 저거 [geu-geo] = that thing over there

You can form various expressions using 이, 그, or 저 along with other words.
Example)

사람 [sa-ram] means a person
이 사람 [i sa-ram] = this person, this man here, this lady here, he, she
그 사람 [geu sa-ram] = the person, that person, he, she
저 사람 [ jeo sa-ram] = that person over there, he, she

FYP's open selection is like playing mind games...cool, not.

korean level 1, lesson 1-4

learning Korean online is fun. Recommend this website: www.talktomeinkorean.com. Content below is extracted from there...

1)안녕하세요. = Hello. / Hi. / How are you? / Good afternoon. / Good evening. / etc...

안녕+하세요 = 안녕하세요.
[an-nyeong]+[ha-se-yo]

안녕 = well-being, peace, health
하세요 = you do, do you?, please do

2)감사합니다. = Thank you.

감사 + 합니다 = 감사합니다.
[gam-sa]+[hap-ni-da]

감사 = appreciation, thankfulness, gratitude
합니다 = I do, I am doing

3)네. [ne] = That’s right. / I agree. / Sounds good. / What you said is correct.
아니요. [aniyo] = That’s not right. / I don’t agree. / What you said is not correct

e.g.
커피 좋아해요? [keo-pi jo-a-hae-yo?] = Do you like coffee?
네. 좋아해요. [ne. jo-a-hae-yo] = Yes, I like coffee.

커피 좋아해요? [keo-pi jo-a-hae-yo?] = Do you like coffee?
아니요. 안 좋아해요. [aniyo. an jo-a-hae-yo] = No, I don’t like coffee.

커피 안 좋아해요? [keo-pi an jo-a-hae-yo?] = You don’t like coffee?
아니요. 좋아해요. [aniyo. jo-a-hae-yo] = Yes, I like coffee.

커피 안 좋아해요? [keo-pi an jo-a-hae-yo?] = You don’t like coffee?
네. 안 좋아해요. [ne. an jo-a-hae-yo] = No, I don’t like coffee

abit confusing. but it is a common grammar mistake in English.

네 is more than just YES or THAT’S RIGHT.
While 네 [ne] is used to express “Yes” or “That’s right”, it is also used as a conversation filler.
If you listen to two Korean people talking with each other, you will hear them saying 네 quite
often, even when it is not intended to mean “Yes”.
So two people can have a conversation like this. Imagine it is all in Korean.

A: You know what, I bought this book yesterday,
B: 네. [ne]
A: and I really like it.
B: 네.
A: But it’s a bit too expensive.
B: 네.
A: Do you know how much it was?
B: How much was it?
A: It was 100 dollars!
B: 네? [ne?]
A: So I paid the money with my credit card.
B: 네...
A: But I still like it a lot because it’s a book by Kyeong-eun Choi, one of the teachers at TalkToMeInKorean.com
B: 네...

So, as you can see from the dialog above, 네 [ne] is a multi-player. It can be:
Yes. / That’s right
but also,
I see. / I got it. / I’m here! (when someone calls you) / I understand. / Ah-ha. / etc...

4) 네, 맞아요. [ne, ma-ja-yo] = Yes, that’s right.

5) 안녕히 계세요. [an-nyeong-hi gye-se-yo] = Stay in peace
안녕히 가세요. [an-nyeong-hi ga-se-yo] = Go in peace

6) Best tip given ever! hahaha :D

When Korean people say 안녕하세요 [an-nyeong-ha-se-yo], 안녕히 계세요 [an-nyeong-hi gyese-yo] or 안녕히 가세요 [an-nyeong-hi ga-se-yo], they don’t always pronounce EVERY single
letter clearly. So often times, what you would hear is just the ending part, “세요” [se-yo].
So you can deliberately sound more fluent by just saying 세요 [se-yo] for all of these occasions.

7) 죄송합니다. [ joe-song-hap-mi-da] = I apologise/ I feel ashamed. (strictly for apologies, not applicable to "i'm sorry that (something unfortunate) happen to you" case)

8) 저기요. [ jeo-gi-yo] = Excuse me ONLY applicable for calling out to gain someone's attention or asking waiter/waitress to take order.

9) 잠시만요. [ jam-si-man-yo] (literal meaning: “Just a second.”)
죄송합니다. [ joe-song-ham-ni-da] (literal meaning: “I am sorry.”)
잠깐만요. [ jam-kkan-man-yo] (literal meaning: “Just a second.”)
= excuse me, please give way. (to pass through a crowd)

** Yes, “jamsimanyo” and “jamkkanmanyo” are the same thing.

rants.

When i hear ppl's replies, i remember why i chose to keep quiet in the first place.

When i see how my sister studies, doing for the sake of doing, i recall how great my sec sch teachers were. What extra stuff they bothered to teach us, like mrs yeo which showed us how to derive all the equations for volumes and surfaces. Til date, i still remember that the surface of a sphere is 2/3 that of the surface of the cylinder that encompasses it. and that the volume of a pyramid is 1/3 of the cube/cuboid that encompass it...and so on. haha such simple derivations then have led to more complicated ones as my studies progress...interesting...

another issue:

just want to say: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREEDOM OF SPEECH. period.

If one insists, one would have to be prepared to bear the consequences.

when you want to say something, being human, a social creature, you would consider what your listeners' response maybe, the consequences that may result for it and from there make a decision whether to modify, moderate and simply just not say what was on ur mind.

So, forcing yourself on others who are uncomfortable with what you said, is inhumane. That said, the above may not apply to all situations, like a mother nagging and a child and so on. If goodwill is the speaker's intention, it would be unjustifiable to say that the speaker is inhumane, right. so apply when appropriate. hahaha

Do i look innocent?

Though at first glance, i may seem naive and innocent, i am not. hahaha.

Often i find myself disliking certain ppl and yet unable to voice that out cos everyone else seem okay with them. Despite the majority opinion versus minority opinion thingy, i still secretly hold true to my thoughts, ideas and impressions of the that person. I am unconventional and dislikes herd mentality. For this case at least! hahas

I like to say i secretly pride myself on being able to judge ppl accurately. Definitely judgement cant be based on nothing right, so, i have to add that i pride myself on my sharp observations too! so much pride have i, eh?

so okay, currently on my mind now are 2 such persons...

____________________________________________

i am a shadow of what i was before. Before the naive girl in me is being tore apart by the ugliness of other self-centred humans.

I was browsing through some of my old autograph books...Back in those days when they are all the rage, everyone owns one such book and passes it around the whole class for a written record of "who are my friends in secondary/primary school"...

Ppl wrote that im always happy and cheerful and how i brighten their day. I wonder, was i really like that? If so, days back then must be happier then. Nowadays, what is there to be happy about? Just travelling to school is like a chore. Of course going home is supposed to be happy, but i guess one can be too troubled or tired to actually feel happy alr. SIGH

Ppl wrote that i was very helpful, enthusiastic and what not. Hmmms back then my illusion of witches only exist in fairytales wasnt popped yet. i didnt know and havent met anyone who was selfish and self-centred to the extent that it would change my whole outlook of everyone else on Earth. sn was just such a nice, sheltered, warm and lovely place, even with the preachy principals and other horrible events in my sec sch life.

aww the memories. Worth reliving and reminiscing BUT, i wld still prefer the smarter and more cautious and more mature me now. For the record, i have decided my age to remain at 17 gg to 18 no matter what. Time is passing me by too quickly...

i am 17 gg on 18.

Oh another thing...you know how sometimes it get annoying when someone talks to you about something that u are totally not interested about? Although you dont seem to be participating in the "conversation", that person totally didnt take the hint and rushes on enthusiastically about his chosen topic. That gets on my nerves especially if im occupied with something. AND the most important factor here is that person happens to be someone that you are on close terms with. You dont really want to issue a "oh, i dont know and dont care so shush" kind of reply in fear of hurting that person... oh dear, the torture continues. This what i observed ill do...

- with eileen, just interrupt her and change topic, she catches on very fast anyways.
- with my sis, just keep quiet and let her run out of gas. At least to my sis, im not obligated to give replies when directed qns at.
- with grp a, just nod and smile mildly and turn away letting ur attention drift to something else. At least with the attention gone, they will move on the other targets and not me!
- with grp b, post a question instead of answering to divert the topic. Question shd be straight forward and easy to answer. This breaks their train of thought and hopefully they will steer to other topics.

food for thought!

ttfn.

Korean wave

Yayes, i am sooooooooooooo HAPPY!

Qiu xinhui managed to buy an authentic copy of Oh! mini album for me all the way from Korea! Maybe it could be bought from some store in Singapore but whatever! It always feels soo much nicer buying things closer to the source. HAHAs.

Currently being washed over by the Korean wave and happily drowning in it.

Firstly, i must dedicate one paragraph to say Happy Birthday Seohyun! Shes turned 19. yes, only. Snsd is going to celebrate their 3rde anniversary soon and this maknae is only 19. so that means she debut at 16. wth. im still struggling with 'O's. She's so smart, currently in uni 1st year and shes so cute with yonghwa! aaaaaaaaaaahs. i look forward to catching the next ep of the sweet potato couple in we got married. Be it subbed or unsubbed. If only i could learn korean for free. :( haix love SNSD to bits.

Recently, i went to K with my uni og who knows that im into snsd but arent as enthusiastic abt them as i am. I think other than gee and nobody, they dont noe anything else. maybe run devil run? dont noe. Anyways, i enjoyed singing all my korean songs like oh!, kissing you, genie, bo peep, chocolate love and what not but its just such a pity noone sang with me. SAD... nevermind i will slowly influence them, just like how i spread gee.mp3 to everyone and listen to it on loop during exams-studying period.

Yayes. i finished watching Cinderella's sister and started on Dong Yi without knowing that it is still ongoing! Arrghs i cant stand the wait! sigh. Dongyi is currently an exiled palace maid and havent progress to being a royal concubine yet...

YAYes i look forward to more SNSD performances....

I am bored...

Recently, i have been affected by my sis and am now an avid SNSD fan. I like seohyun, taeyoon, yoona and yuri in particular...

Watching alot of their videos and listening alot to their songs on youtube...am trying to learn to sing run devil run. Learning how to sing in korean is like a rao kou ling...btw did u noe that SNSD's taeyoon, seohyun and one more(forgot who) has so called specialties in Chinese. Interesting eh...and i dont like wondergirls anymore cos they accepted the new member....

Meanwhile, in between, i am watching jiu4 xiang3 lai4 zhe4 ni3....all my english shows are ending....SIGH.

i AM bored. Not really because i have totally nothing to do but i am running out of ideas of things to do other than study my special semester subject...if i have all the money and time in the world...

i will shop alot!
take many language lessons! at the moment korean is most desired.
learn some music instruments! like keyboard and guitar...
take a dance class?!
go overseas!
and many more!

haiya...tts why there are such things as resource management, time management, money management, OPTIMISATION - reminds me of last sem's comp methods tableau....SIGH

okies im done ranting. ttfn.

Why I like UNIQLO...

Its been some time since Uniqlo has came to Singapore, here are the few good ticks i give them:

1) Good Service: Ain't it nice to hear a cheery "Welcome to Uniqlo!" everytime you step into a store? Mind you, Singaporeans can be rather cold, rude and unresponsive to such a warm welcome, guess we are not used to it. Yet, these service people manage to keep the spirits high all day... next time we have to smile back ok! Perhaps, this high standard of good service attitude comes from the Japanese Corporate culture. But if u compare this with the mumbled tones or substandard greetings of "ii-ra-sha-ii-ma-se", some even just settle for "MA -se" which means nothing. i seriously think these Japanese restaurants should either learn from Uniqlo, just use English la if japanese is too difficult to say, or do something to improve it man!

2) Sales! My Favourite! I realised Uniqlo have sales on different items all year round! its not something percent off sale, but an outright price cut to 9.90, 19.90 or 29.90. Straightforward,i like. And they only have sale on that particular item ONCE. AND i noticed they like have sales on NEW items. Like currently now, its their leggings, dry fit jackets and in-built bra tops. Not bad a sales tactic eh? Im so proud of myself that i managed to buy the high quality smooth cotton top for only 9.90 and its now retailing at 24.90 i think. Quite a bargain i feel! Pity i only bought 2 pieces...

3) Colours! I really like the BRIGHT colours that Uniqlo has. Thats why the whole store can be in white wash with minimal deco yet it still look so cheery!

YAY. tts enough reasons to love uniqlo for me!

I believe, Ich glaube, Io credo, Je crois...

Im not a polyglot, i just look them up on some online translation dictionaries. tis easy and google is wonderful. As i always say and reiterate here again, Google is my friend and i love google. period.

These days you can seriously look up ANYTHING and EVERYTHING on google. Some people say that i am a stalker but i claimed not. stalker = private detective and i havent reached that standard yet. Im still unable to uncover stuff that are buried in secret databases. All i CAN do is to look up a person's profile on facebook, note the groups he/she joins and therefore deduce their affilations and hobbies and what nots. A casual ( note CASUAL) search on msn by typing one's name or between inverted commas for narrowing of search results usually yield just what u want to find. Normally people posts things on the net INCLUDING facebook thinking that those videos, photos and WORDS remain their copyrighted property and wont ever reach unintended hands. WRONG. if search engines can pick up those info, so can the whole world. Whats added to the mix is as google expands, they take over more websites like facebook and blogger and add these into their search engines, tts why google search engine is almighty u noe. haha. fyi. not the meat of this post.

Okay, i believe in sharing.

First, i shall share this wonderful secluded photoshop which washes all my photos now for a cheap rate of only 15 cents per 4R photo. There is of course a minimum amount of 100 pcs. You will be glad to know that they provide express service. So one hour later, your photos are due for collection. However, the sad thing is its located in a not so obvious, somewhere hidden in an old HDB estate...

i believe that aunties make the world go round.

Remember the so called "invisible hand" that drives the economy toward a perfect market sort of result and makes real life close to essay-scripted results? hahas all those IDEAL models of economics. So i think that aunties actualy are the invisible hand! They make it their onus to find out whats cheap out there and whats not and more importantly, they spread the word! they share! (in line with my first belief) So assuming ideal transmission of information, this will cause everyone to boycott those expensive stalls and go buy the cheap ones. This is of course assuming homogenous products. sounds familiar eh? haha. so the results will follow the Law of Demand and all the rubbish models i learn 2/3 years ago. rubbishy stuff but yes. oh just a random comment: politicians are actually like economists. they analyse countries' economies and try to improve on them. right? so to be a good politician, u have to have some sort of knowledge on economics and i guess human geog. not my cup of tea definitely.

i believe that in this technology age, its everyone's onus to upgrade themselves on the new useful (not trendy) technology constantly, or risk ,as we always like to say in secondary school chinese essays, 淘汰. hahas. yerps. Technology is afterall invented to help make everything faster and hence more efficient. The downside to all these is that dependence on electricity and lack of regard of consequeces to the environment is appalling. So if one day 全世界都停了电 (according to tank) then we would have to go back to the tools of the highest technology that does not require electricity. One simple example is how students nowadays dont noe how to use log tables and normal distribution tables anymore cos there is the all-powerful graphic calculator, im the victim here. haha.

okays, thats all for now...til i feel like writing again...

The only way to go

In my mind, everyone i meet is rank somewhere on my friendship ladder
and that ladder is definitely a every tall and peakish cone. Few besties at the top and lots of friends at the bottom.

Scorpios are never a very forgiving lot. We may not practice an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth but i do not forgive and forget. sad but true. So once you start dropping in the conal structure, the only way to go is down and down only. Of course, i guess the only way u can climb back up is through time. And that is not a very readily available resource methinks...

Food for though eh?

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

especially my BFFs who are spending it overseas...kylie, weiling, eileen...

k-ing

After like 2 years of k-ing i deduced the following facts:

1) i really love fan fan and liang jing ru's songs alot but then they are not nice to sing at all at kbox cos they are just so damn hard to sing! have to have enough breath and range and the key aint very easy to catch too. furthermore, my sense of rhythm isnt very fantastic, which is to say quite bad, so it sucks not being able the sing songs i love...

hence, the result is i am a closet fan wei qi and liang jin ru songs singer...i only sing them at home :P

2) i think my sense of harmony has improved! albeit slightly only. my theory is just to sing at a key that is not the melody. how fantastic. it actually works 50% of the time and feels funny for the other times...

3) i really liked singing duets but then its hard to harmonise in them :/ if only im like some wonderkid that can hear and makeup harmony as we sing along. if only...

random thoughts ftw.
